Getting Up to Speed on New Database Platforms with Foglight

Date: February 25th
Time: 11:00 am ET
Location: Microsoft Teams Townhall

New database platforms have a way of landing on a DBA’s plate before there’s time to really learn them. In this Skills 101 session, we’ll show how Quest Foglight helps you get comfortable faster by acting as both a monitoring tool and a learning guide.

Using real-world examples, we’ll walk through how Foglight dashboards, baselines, and workload insights help you understand how an unfamiliar database behaves, what “normal” looks like, and when something actually needs attention.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Add and onboard new database platforms in Foglight
  • Understand what Foglight offers across different database technologies
  • Set up alarm templates and use AI Alarms to make alerts easier to understand
  • Use baselines to separate normal behaviour from real issues

If you’re supporting new cloud, open-source, or modern data platforms and want to build confidence without slowing everything down, this session is for you.

Finding the “Why” Behind Performance Changes with Foglight

Date: April 22nd
Time: 11:00 am ET
Location: Microsoft Teams Townhall

Ever chase a performance issue only to realize something changed… but no one knows exactly what, when, or why? In this Skills 101 session, we’ll focus on how Foglight’s Change Tracking and Comparison capabilities within Performance Investigator help teams move from suspicion to proof when performance deviates.

This session is designed for existing Foglight users who want faster, evidence-driven root cause analysis using time-aligned visibility.

In this session, we’ll explore how to:

  • Use Change Tracking to align configuration, schema, execution plan, and system changes directly to performance timelines
  • Correlate performance degradation with specific environmental or workload changes
  • Apply Comparison to identify new, missing, or altered SQL, users, and workloads across time periods or instances
  • Combine Change Tracking and Comparison to validate root cause using evidence instead of assumptions
  • Reduce investigation time by focusing analysis on what changed and what’s different

By the end of the session, you’ll have a clear, repeatable method for diagnosing performance issues using Foglight’s Change Tracking and Comparison tools.

Cut Through the Noise With Custom Dashboard Queries

Date: September 29th
Time: 11:00 am ET
Location: Microsoft Teams Townhall

Ever opened a monitoring dashboard and felt like it was shouting every metric at you except the one you actually needed? You're not alone. In modern IT environments, where hybrid workloads, constant alerts, and mystery spikes are the daily norm, visibility only matters if it’s your visibility.

In this practical Skills 101 session, we’ll show you how to take control of Foglight by building custom UI queries that surface exactly what matters. You’ll learn how to shape Foglight into a clean, focused command center tailored to your role.

You will:

  • Explore how UI queries work and how they drive customizable, dynamic Foglight dashboards
  • Build queries that highlight your critical metrics across databases, apps, and infrastructure
  • Reduce dashboard noise while boosting clarity, accuracy, and real-time insight
  • Align monitoring views with business priorities, whether you're supporting SLAs, troubleshooting performance, or keeping leadership calm during quarterly peaks

If you’ve ever wondered, “Can Foglight just show me what I need without yelling at me about everything else?” this Skills 101 session has your answer.

Going Beyond the Basics: Custom Monitoring using User-Defined Collections

Date: TBD
Time: 11:00 am ET
Location: Microsoft Teams Townhall

Foglight does a lot out of the box, but as environments grow more complex, standard metrics don’t always tell the full story. In this advanced Skills 101 session, we’ll explore how User-Defined Collections (UDCs) let you bring custom data into Foglight and turn it into meaningful rules, dashboards, and services that better reflect your environment.

We’ll dive into real-world implementations, call out common configuration pitfalls, explain how UDC data is collected and stored in the Foglight Management Server, and show how to turn that data into actionable views and alerts, with time set aside for live Q&A.

We’ll explore:

  • How to create and configure User-Defined Collections, including SQL queries, collection intervals, and key versus metric columns
  • How Foglight agents collect and store UDC data in the Foglight Management Server data model
  • How to build actionable dashboards and alerts using UDC dashboards and custom rules
  • How to handle multi-row and multi-column queries, including why they don’t display by default and how to expose them
  • How to create UI Queries for advanced dashboards, enabling richer visualizations for custom data

You’ll walk away with practical techniques for extending Foglight beyond standard monitoring and building views and alerts that actually reflect how your environment works.
