Hi, my name is Roger Layton. I'm the product manager for Dell Data Protection Rapid Recovery.
Today, I'd like to demonstrate a new feature in this product called Rapid Snap for Virtual. Rapid Snap for Virtual allows me to agentlessly protect virtual machines running inside a VMware environment. So, if I jump here, I can show you that in my navigation pane, I have a collection of both physical and virtual machines. And one of the duties here is that there's no new interface or separate interface to learn. It's all integrated directly into the same interface, making a very simple to learn and manage. You see I have a new icon that represents my hypervisor, as well as additional icons below the show those virtual machines as being protected without agent.
So, let me jump into my hypervisor for a moment. Then, my virtual machines page, and you can see a list all the virtual machines located on that host. Those in green are currently being protected agentlessly. The rest are not. So, if I want to protect new machines, I can simply come into here, It'll list all the virtual machines in my host. I can select those I may want to include for protection, hit Next, and it'll go forward.
However, I want to address, for a moment, the auto-protect new virtual machines, but I want to do that somewhere else. So let me jump out of here for a moment and jump over to my settings. Now, while I could make some basic changes here to my nightly jobs, change the host, some of the snapshot settings, what I want to focus is on auto protection. Now, auto protection allows me to set a folder for protection, and then any time a new virtual machine gets added to that folder, it'll automatically be included into the protection schedule. And back up on a regular basis on whatever protection schedule here I set.
So, I want to jump in here, and even though I have agentless folder, I'm going to select it with the protection scheme specified up here, and hit Apply. And, now, any time a new machine is added to that environment for that folder, it will automatically be protected and the backups will run normally.
All right. So, now that have our auto-protect jobs schedule, let's talk about recovery for a moment. There are lots of different ways and methods to back up, but what's most important is being able to recover. So let me jump into my virtual machine, and you'll see I have a list of recovery points, jumping back for at least a few weeks, if not months.
And let's say I want to restore one of these. I have a couple different options. One, I can mount that volume directly. And, then from there, I can simply do a file-level recovery from the file system mounted for that volume. Alternatively, I can come in and I can perform a restore, and that restore will allow me to select a virtual machine I want to restore to or even a physical machine with the boot CD. It allows me to map the volume. So if I want to restore just my system volume or the data volume or both, I can select that. And when I hit Finish, it is going to perform a restore on that virtual machine back to the point in time that I specified with the recovery point. And it will then do a reboot, and that machine will be identical to the way that it looked at the time the original snapshot was captured.
So that was a quick overview of the Rapid Snap for Virtual technology in the Dell Data Protection Rapid Recovery product. You can find more information on DellSoftware.com/products/Rapid-Recovery. And thank you for your time.
